Have you ever wondered why pure Argan oil is much more expensive than good quality Olive oil?
Argan oil doesn't magically appear as it is. The smooth and silky oil that appears must've come from somewhere. Follow me on this
laborious journey and discover how Argan oil comes to be and why it is considered one of the most prized oils in the world.
Argan oil has to start somewhere, where does it come from?
Well simply put the valuable oil comes from the kernels of the Argan tree. This tree has it rough, it can survive in the harshest conditions and still pass on it's nutrients through the leaves. It's resilience allows it to withstand blazing hot weather conditions. The Berber women of Morocco have used Argan oil for centuries for their hair, skin and nails. Both animals and people have benefitted from the tree's fascinating properties.
The process of making Argan oil is extremely difficult, especially because the nut itself is inedible and the seed inside is what contains the valuable oil. They are hand plucked from the tree generally between the months of July and September and dry them for months to even years before pressing them in a laboring process. If that doesn't seem enough, know that the actual process takes an eternity. Literally.... Since pressing will generally be done by hand and the shell is really hard, pressing itself will take up to 20 hours for as little as 1 liter of oil. Mechanical pressing could be a possibility, but that's unsatisfactory in many ways. Essentially, this way of pressing will lose many of the Argan oil properties and wont be as efficient resulting in a highly refined oil. Moreover, the Berber women will lose their role in cold pressing Argan by hand, something they've been doing for ages.
Okay, we know how time consuming and difficult it is to obtain Argan oil, but why's it so valuable? What properties does it comprise of?
